Medicine is Thy Food

Updated: Apr 13

I want to share some simple ways that I enjoy food as Medicine, sometimes we just need a little nudge and reminder that we can be creative in the kitchen.

Liquid Medicine

I think herbal tea is a huge aspect of the health I experience. I emphatically encourage loose herbal tea as part of someone's daily routine. Though, I think we can make it even more fun and more enriching.

One of my favorite ways to add joy to warm beverage is treats in my cup, that I let soften and get to eat at the end. My favorites to add are listed below.

  • Goji Berries

  • Jujube Dates

  • Codonopsis Root Chunks

  • Ginseng Root

  • Candied Elecampane (I toast and pan coat in local honey, then store in fridge)

Another way I enjoy herbal tea is making it the base liquid of a warm chai, with warmed milk of choice, chai powder, grass-fed whey (if that works in your body), and carob or honey. Options are endless.

My last herbal liquid is best for spring and summer, although can be if you have access to fresh herbs in the winter.

  • I take 3 cups of my favorite citrus juice

  • 2 TSB honey or 2 dates

  • 1/2 cup Fresh thyme, oregano, lemon balm, terragon, mint (you can choose any herb you like)

I then blend this all together and then strain with nut milk bag.

If you want to take this to the NEXT LEVEL, you can make the creamy lemonade herbal elixir.

  • Chopping one lemon into pieces peel and all, can also freeze these to make it cold (use organic lemons-no apeel).

  • Dash of vanilla

  • 1-2dates

  • 1 TBSP organic olive oil

  • Add any addition you want, that will take this creamy lemonade into its own unique creation.

  • Options include: Roses, butterfly pea powder, Maca, Matcha, Fresh herbs, dragon fruit powder, freeze dried powder of any fruit, spirulina, vitamineral greens, macuna, mesquite, chlorophyll drops. Honestly and medicinal powder

  • I blend these in a blender, and then sometimes I strain, and sometimes I don't I use a nut Milk bag or somtimes I use a metal mesh and let it drip out while I do other stuff

So now you may be getting the gist here...

I love also making salad dressings with mushroom powders and fresh herbs blended into beautiful and tasty dipping sauces or vegtable coverings. I will not gatekeep Healthforce's Earth powder--- I literally use that in every savory soup or dressing I make. It is a game changer. It's a fair price considering how long it actually last, even though I use it near every day a large jar will last me for 5 months.

The next thing I do that make food medicine, is through soup broths, and the stock making phase is a great time to add medicinal roots like astraglus, burdock, ginger, tumeric, horseradish, codonopsis and dandelion. Mushroom powders or dried slices work great in the simmer phase as well. If you are simmering for 2 hours total, at 1 1//2 hours that is a great time to add in leafy herbs like celery, nettles, dulse, parsley, marjoram, and gotu kola. These are just a few suggestions.

When you are making the same food the same way, these are some simple ways to add variety into you life. fortifying your system so it has all it needs to repair the cells. Stay well :) beautiful people.
